While much smaller than Auckland, Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island. Although some hotels in the city centre were damaged in the 2010/2011 earthquakes, there is still a range of great accommodation around the city, whether you prefer a luxury hotel, a friendly bed & breakfast or an inexpensive backpackers lodge. Here are our tips.
Christchurch accommodation: near the airport
Christchurch Airport is only 12 km from the city centre, so you can easily stay near the airport and easily get into the city to explore. Copthorne Commodore Christchurch Airport hotel is conveniently located next to the airport with all the usual hotel facilities – the superior plus rooms on the business level are our favourites. For a more personal experience, try the Belmont B&B – an Edwardian villa offering warm hospitality and comfortable, spacious rooms. If you prefer motels, try the Airport Delta Motel and Airport Christchurch Motel, the newest motels near Christchurch Airport and the only 4-star plus accommodation options. There’s also the Airport Gateway Motor Lodge, offering friendly service and limousine transfers to and from the airport, and for a more budget option, the Airport Lodge Motel or the Highway Inn.
Christchurch accommodation: Central
If you want 5 star luxury, you can’t go past award-winning The George, a boutique hotel in the heart of Christchurch. The Chateau on the Park is a 4 star hotel set amongst 5 acres of beautifully maintained gardens on the edge of Hagley Park. The Heritage Hotel offers contemporary apartment and suite accommodation in the lovingly restored Old Government Building in the heart of the city. The Heritage is taking bookings from 1 December 2012.
Christchurch accommodation: Backpacker lodges
There are backpacker lodges dotted all around Christchurch. Try the North South Holiday Park, a full scale camp site as well as motel and backpacker accommodation located in park like grounds with tennis court and swimming pool. There’s also Dorset House, centrally located Victorian character accommodation,
